Rihanna, Giselle, Sarah Jessica—what do these epically, enviably glamourous women have in common besides first-name-only recognition status? They have all discovered and embraced one of the hottest hair trends we’ve seen over the past few years: balayage. Maybe you’ve heard the word before, maybe you haven’t the foggiest notion of what it might be, regardless, this is one trend you should definitely open yourself up to trying.
Balayage is a timeless French method for hand dyeing and highlighting hair. The process has been around for quite some time, but has gained popularity in the past few years, ever since style icons like Beyoncé, Natalie Portman, and Chrissy Teigan have started sporting the look. Since 2015 it has been spotted all over the runways and red carpets and fashion mags, resulting in more and more women requesting the balayage method of colouring their hair.
So just what does bayalage look like? The technique gives you subtle highlights that are less uniform and more natural looking than traditional foil highlights. Colour is hand painted onto the surface of your hair (no foil needed!) and is totally unique look to you—no cookie-cutter streaks of dye will be seen—your look is crafted and designed by you and your stylist. The colour is also painted on lower down the shaft of the hair so you don’t have a pesky root line to manage, which is pretty much a priceless benefit.

It’s a perfect style for someone looking for an understated change, and an easy to maintain change—the colour grows out slowly and naturally with very little maintenance needed on your end other than taking care to use shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for dyed hair, which will help to prolong the colour. You also want to try and protect the colour from heat when you’re styling your hair, just like with other dyeing methods. Think of it this way: it’s as if you’ve spent the summer lounging on the beach and now your hair has that sun-kissed look that you’ve always been dying to have. How good does that sound?

Balayage works beautifully with all different hair types and colours, too. Blond, brown, black, red, thick, thin, straight, curly; no matter your hair type or colour you can try balayage for a subtle yet beautiful change in your appearance. And we have absolutely no doubt that you’re going to love it. We do have a few recommendations for embracing the balayage trend. If you feel like taking the plunge and trying it, we suggest bringing in photos of what you’re looking for so we make sure we’re on the same page with the colour and style. We can’t promise to make you look exactly like J-Lo, but we sure as hell are going to try.
