MEET KARI ROBERTS – SIXTH SENSE’S TREND MAKE-UP ARTIST

Kari Makeup

Kari Roberts is Sixth Sense’s resident make-up artist, creating beautiful, contemporary looks that reflect our brand and capture the latest trends. With years of training in specialist hair and media makeup as well a wealth of experience working with stylists, models and photographers, Kari was an obvious choice to work with us. Learn more about Kari and her take on this season’s latest trends in our one-on-one interview below.

Kari, tell us about yourself, what do you do, how did you get into makeup, get your qualifications and what experience do you have in the industry?

I am a professional makeup artist based in Birmingham. I got into makeup when I studied hairdressing at college. My tutor introduced me to a BTEC Course in Theatrical Hair and Media Makeup and my interest evolved from there. I’d always loved makeup but had never really thought of it as a real job. I decided to continue my studies at university where I have recently graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Specialist Hair and Media Makeup. Throughout the past three or four years I have been continuously working with photographers, stylists and models to create a body of work I feel represents me well as an artist. In this time I have met some amazing people and have been lucky enough to have my work published in UK & international magazines and most recently an image digitally displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. I work with a huge range of people from performing makeovers on photoshoots to working with celebrity clientele for events.

How did you start working with Sixth Sense Salon, what do you like about us?

I began working with Sixth Sense Salon for their Spring / Summer collection. What I love most about the team is that they are all enthusiastic about creating the styles which are on-trend with perfection. Their talent shines through their work and inspires me to create complementary looks. We all work well together and our ideas bounce of one another to get the best possible outcome.

What are your top makeup trends for Autumn/Winter, what’s coming in, what’s going out?
There are some great trends to look out for this Autumn/Winter, such as:

 image3Barefaced Beauty:
This look can be seen backstage at fashion week for brands such as Balmain. The look features fresh, glowing skin using a moisturiser and BB cream with a dab of pink lip balm to give that ‘just bitten’ look. Brush up the brows and fill in with a pencil. It’s a minimal look that is fresh, pretty and modern.

Vampalicous:
This look is based on the dark vampy looks seen at Milan fashion week -blackcurrant toned matte lips teamed with heavy mascara and brushed brows, perfect and simple. To add extra va va voom, coat your nails in a colour to match your lips.

image5Rock ’n’ Roll
MAC have been creating a lot of Rock ’n’ Roll looks on the catwalk this season. This look is a twist on the classic smoky eye and consists of smudging smoky/glittery liner on the lower lashes. Team with a healthy looking base to keep the look fresh, with neat brows. This gives the perfect balance for a pretty evening look.

Deep, rich earthy tones were used this season to give eyes a statement. Blending intense orange colours into the crease will give that blown-out, big-eye effect. Keep the rest of the look simple and team lips with a neutral shade.

image4Graphic Liner
This look has been the most experimented throughout this season. Marc Jacobs created a smudged effect whilst Chanel have opted for more structure. It’s up to you how you wear your liner this season as long as it’s big and bold.
