Say what? Christmas brings with it some level of Christmas craziness, Elves on Shelves, Baubles on Beards (true story) and the belief that ugly sweaters are actually cool. We thought we’d seen it all, but the new #tinselhair trend infiltrating Instagram is blowing our minds (for all the right reasons).
Tinsel Hair is the ultimate homage to Christmas, and the best thing about it is – nothing is permanent. In fact, festive hair requires no hair dye at all as the look is achieved with metallic hair extension clips. Adored by beauty bloggers, fashionistas and celebs (including Beyoncé) strands of tinsel are available on clips in a range of colours. Think traditional red and green, or seek out metallics which capture the essence of metallic highlights without any of the permanence.
Hair tinsel is available in two versions, hair tinsel clips which allow for a dramatic look or hair tinsel strands which are much more subtle and individually woven into hair. Alternatively, go old-school and stock up on genuine Christmas tree tinsel strands for the most authentic look. Individual strands represent a much more epic commitment of time investment, but it’s certainly our favourite take on this trend.
Individual tinsel hair-strands (which can be applied at our salon) can add just the right amount of shimmer to do any do. Blondes, greys and whites – stand out with subtle shades of gold and silver, or create waves with shades of pastels. Brunettes – opt for coppers, golds or play peek-a-boo with single strands of pinks and reds. Red-heads – there really is no stopping you with strands of white, purple and icy rainbow. Be sure to trim all your tinsel for a layered look that naturally mimics your own hair-line.
This isn’t just one for the Christmas parties, #tinselhair is even coming to an office near you woven subtly into plaits or loud and proud in down-dos. Take your favourite party hair-styles and bling them up with some subtle strings of sparkle.
Of course, as with every hair-trend there is going to be a totally OTT way to embrace it and, well, why not? Seek out extra thick tinsel strands and have fun decorating your hair as you would your tree (bar the fairy lights, for the record – fairy lights + fairy light = never a good decision ).
While we’re talking tinsel, hair extensions aren’t the only way to get your hair festive ready. How about some sparkly accessories that are cute enough to be coveted for your stocking?
If your signature style is a bit more chic, why not grab the season by the short and curlies with diamantes? This type of cinderella sparkle is usually only befitting of weddings and formal occasions, so everyone should jump on this no-excuses-needed opportunity to wear diamonds.
Of course, if you like the tinsel hair trend but are put off by its subtleness, why not be shameful and don a tinsel hair band? Afterall, ’tis the season – just take note, tinsel is not for life – IT’S JUST FOR CHRISTMAS.
